NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (nicu)
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Neonatal Intensive care unit (NICU) of the GWMH is a unit which provides care to neonates from day of birth to the twenty eighth day of life ( 0- 28 days of life). It is made up of the high dependency unit (HDU) and the low dependency unit (LDU). etc. Our main objective is to be the leading referral department for all neonates within the municipality and beyond.
FUNCTIONS
- The HDU takes care of neonates with conditions such as birth asphyxia, respiratory distress, preterm etc
- At the LDU, we admit cases like Neonatal sepsis and Neonatal jaundice.
- The unit has a bed capacity of about 20 cots including incubators.
- It also has two firefly and four other phototherapy machines for the treatment of jaundice.
- The unit has a paediatrician, two paediatric nurse specialists, two paediatric nurses, two registered General nurses, 12 midwives and 6 auxiliary nurses who man the unit day and night.
- Promotes effective parenthood.
